If using a pintle hook combo such as # C48200 and coupling to the ball then the latch part would not be able to come down far enough to insert the pin to hold it in place which is fine because the coupler locks onto the ball. A pintle hook is not designed to prevent standard trailer coupler from coming off of the hitch ball. There is also a good possibility that the top portion of the pintle hook would not be able to close far enough to insert the pin through the pintle hook. The top of the coupler will sit further above the hitch ball than what the pintle hook was designed for.

The plate on the Tow Ready Pintle Hook Mount # 63058 has a gusset behind it that keeps it in place and will not allow it to flex (see attached picture). Unless you are exceeding the 8,000 lbs towing or 800 lb tongue weight capacities then you have no worries about the trailer flexing that plate and making contact with your bumper!

I believe I know what you are asking and you should unhook your trailer instead of removing the entire unit from your hitch still hooked up to the trailer as it would be extremely difficult to get it back in your hitch.

Part of the play you're experiencing is from the pintle connection on the B&W Tow & Stow Pintle Hook with 2" Ball - 2" Hitches # BWTS10055 and part of it is the tolerances built in for the shank to the receiver - both are common with ball mount and pintle hook connections in general.
